Bhumi Pednekar is reportedly stepping away from the second season of The Royals as the makers plan to take the story in a new direction. While the series is said to have been renewed soon after its release, reports suggest the upcoming season will focus more on the royal family and palace dynamics rather than the romance between Bhumi and Ishaan Khatter’s characters.
According to a Mid-day report, the makers are now expanding the larger universe of the series instead of continuing the unresolved love story from season one.
A source close to the production dismissed speculation about any fallout between Bhumi and the team, stating that the creative shift was purely story-driven.
The source said, “When you do a romance, it is the story that leads. When the show came out, what resonated with the audience was the family, Ishaan, Sakshi, Zeenat, and the world of The Royals, which feels different. We left season one at an unresolved romance. There was no decision to carry it forward. There was no fight with Bhumi. The makers are simply letting the story lead forward organically in the second season."
If reports are to be believed, the next chapter will continue exploring the royal household and its internal dynamics, while the romantic angle may take a backseat.
Meanwhile, Bhumi is reportedly moving towards more intense and layered projects. The actor is said to be in discussions for a courtroom drama backed by the makers of Haq, featuring Yami Gautam.
She is also rumoured to be part of Imran Khan’s comeback project for Netflix, which has reportedly been under development for a while. Apart from that, Bhumi is expected to begin work on Daldal 2, a sequel believed to align with the darker storytelling space she has recently been gravitating towards.
Bhumi had earlier spoken about the criticism she received for her performance in The Royals after its May 2025 release. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, the actor admitted that the backlash and trolling affected her deeply and led her to take a nine-month break from acting. She shared that while some criticism was harsh, certain feedback also helped her reassess her choices.
Created by Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana and written by Neha Veena Sharma, The Royals revolves around a struggling royal family trying to restore their legacy by turning their ancestral palace into a luxury resort. The ensemble cast also includes Sakshi Tanwar, Nora Fatehi, Vihaan Samat, Dino Morea and Milind Soman.
