Actor Samantha's latest film Maa Inti Bangaaram will begin streaming on JioHotstar on July 17. The platform announced the OTT release on Sunday, giving viewers a clear date and platform for the film's digital debut.
The announcement comes after the film's theatrical run, during which it crossed the Rs 100-crore mark worldwide. Directed by Nandini Reddy, the film also drew attention for placing a woman at the centre of a commercial entertainer, with Samantha later speaking about the doubts that surrounded it before release.
JioHotstar said on Sunday that Maa Inti Bangaaram, led by Samantha, will stream on the platform from July 17. The update answers the main question around the film's OTT release: it will be available to watch on JioHotstar from that date.
Samantha reacts to box office milestone
Earlier, Samantha shared that the milestone was not just about numbers. She said that in the days before the release, she had questioned everything. She wondered whether anyone was talking about the film, whether the promotional material was reaching audiences, and whether people even knew that Maa Inti Bangaaram was releasing.
She also recalled a conversation that stayed with her. According to Samantha, a friend called an exhibitor in a B-centre to ask how the film might fare at the box office. The response, she said, was blunt: "Why would anyone watch a heroine film? If she's in a big hero's film, fine. People know her for the glamour. But a film led by a heroine? Who will come? Nobody."
Samantha said those words reflected the perception surrounding the film before it hit theatres. She wrote, "Real change happens only when someone is willing to take a risk," and added that such risks do not always pay off, but "sometimes they do. For us, this one did."
She also said she hopes the film's success will slowly change the conversation around female-led cinema, so that the next time someone asks about a heroine-led film, the answer is not an immediate rejection, but a hopeful, "Let's see."
