We expected the Met Gala to deliver and it did, bringing bold looks, structured silhouettes, and experimental, avant-garde details that pushed fashion into the realm of art. With the theme "Fashion Is Art," celebrities were given full creative freedom, and they did not hold back. Attendees from India, meanwhile, made sure the country was firmly in the spotlight. Diya Mehta Jatia, too, did just that.
For her Met Gala outing this year, Shloka Mehta's sister collaborated with designer Mayyur Girotra. Her ensemble placed a strong spotlight on West Bengal's traditional Shola craft, bringing the delicate art form to a global fashion stage.
The look blended heritage with high design, drawing inspiration from Baroque and French architecture. Intricate carvings and sculptural relief-like details were woven into the outfit and then layered over a rich Kanjeevaram base, crafted using real gold and silver threads.
Shola-inspired Baroque embroidery created by artisans from Bengal placed over a skirt woven by Kanjeevaram craftsmen. The result was a striking fusion of two traditional crafts, reimagined through a modern couture lens.
For those unaware, West Bengal's traditional Shola craft is a delicate art form that uses a soft, white plant material called shola, which grows in marshy areas. Artisans carefully carve and shape it into intricate designs, often used in decorations for festivals as well as weddings and religious ceremonies.
During Durga Puja, shola is famously used to create the white, ornate crowns and decorative elements for Goddess Durga idols. Because of its lightweight, almost foam-like texture, it allows for very fine detailing, making everything from crowns to decorative motifs look almost sculptural.
Over time, it has become an important part of Bengal's cultural heritage, valued for its craftsmanship and traditional charm.
So, it won't be wrong to say that Jatia's attire was a thoughtful tribute to Indian craftsmanship, presented in a contemporary silhouette that brought heritage artistry into the Met Gala spotlight.
Before heading to the red carpet, Jatia was seen accompanying Isha Ambani, who also left everyone stunned with her look. For the gala, Ambani wore a custom-made saree-inspired ensemble by designer Gaurav Gupta, featuring hand-painted Pichwai-inspired motifs and a sculptural cape.
Other celebrities who attended this year's Met Gala, for which the theme was "Costume Art," included Karan Johar, Manish Malhotra, Beyonce, Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, Bad Bunny, Rihanna, and more.
