Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan is now estimated to be worth Rs 2,500 crore, placing him among the wealthiest actors in India. But just as the actor’s staggering fortune made headlines, so did his rather bemused reaction to a political remark online. After BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj made a comment on "smash the patriarchy with Vande Mataram", Hrithik's five-word response quickly became a talking point. His net worth, however, tells a much bigger story.

According to the Hurun India Rich List 2026, Hrithik ranks fourth among Indian actors, with an estimated wealth of Rs 2,500 crore. He is placed behind actors Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan, whose fortunes are estimated at Rs 10,000 crore, Rs 4,000 crore and Rs 3,000 crore, respectively.

The figure is striking not merely because of its size, but because of the distance Hrithik has travelled to get there. Before the endorsements, businesses and blockbuster paycheques came a period when his family struggled financially, his father, Rakesh Roshan, faced a major setback and the future actor watched his family fight to stay afloat.

How Hrithik built his Rs 2,500 crore fortune

According to the 2026 Hurun list, Hrithik’s estimated wealth has risen from Rs 2,160 crore in 2025 to Rs 2,500 crore in 2026. His business interests are an important part of that financial journey, with his fitness and lifestyle brand HRX among the ventures contributing to his fortune.

The brand, which grew out of Hrithik’s association with fitness and his public image as one of Bollywood’s fittest stars, has expanded his presence beyond films and endorsements. It has also allowed the actor to turn his personal brand into a larger business proposition.

Hrithik’s financial standing today is not dependent on a single film release or acting fee. His career has gradually expanded into businesses and brand partnerships, creating multiple sources of wealth. And that makes the Rs 2,500 crore estimate more than just another celebrity number.

When the Roshans struggled financially

Hrithik has spoken candidly about the difficult years his family went through after Koyla failed at the box office in 1997. The film’s setback had serious financial consequences for filmmaker Rakesh Roshan and his family.

There was a time, Hrithik recalled, when they could not even afford rent. The family eventually moved into a house that, as he remembered it, had little more than walls and floors. It was hardly the beginning anyone would associate with a man whose fortune would eventually run into thousands of crores.

In a 2006 interview with former actor Simi Garewal, he opened up about his family’s financial struggles, saying, "Until the time my dad could earn enough money to buy another house. And then we shifted into another house which was barely just walls and floors. We slept on mattresses, these mats and slowly got the furniture in."

But Rakesh Roshan was not ready to give up. While making Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai, the filmmaker, reportedly mortgaged his house and cars to finance the film, placing much of what the family had left behind his son’s debut. It was a gamble that transformed their lives.

During the same interview, he also said, "As an actor, I was not that successful, but I kept trying. I never moved ahead in my career despite some of my movies doing well. So I started producing films and then moved to direction. Now, when I look back, I feel happy. Back then, I had no idea how I would get the money to run my house. I had two children, a wife and a family to look after. But somehow we always managed."

Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai changed everything

Released in 2000, Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai became a major success and turned Hrithik into a star almost overnight. His debut not only introduced Bollywood to a new leading man but also established the foundation for a career that would stretch across more than two decades.

From Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai to films such as Koi... Mil Gaya, Dhoom 2, Jodhaa Akbar, War and Vikram Vedha, Hrithik gradually built his position as one of Hindi cinema’s most recognisable stars.

But his wealth today is not simply a reflection of his film career. For someone who grew up watching his family struggle to make ends meet, the figure marks an extraordinary distance travelled.
