Calling actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s oath-taking ceremony a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle would not be an exaggeration. The event carried strong political symbolism, cinematic fervour and raw emotion.
To cap it all, Vijay marked the moment with a selfie video featuring Rahul Gandhi and members of the public gathered at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, capturing the significance of the occasion in a single frame.
Just after the swearing-in ceremony for him and his nine ministers concluded, Vijay took out his mobile phone to shoot a selfie video with Rahul Gandhi and his ministers before turning the camera to include everyone in the frame.
Unsurprisingly, the moment drew loud cheers and applause from the audience, who had earlier witnessed the actor-turned-politician scripting history as the first non-Dravidian Chief Minister in 59 years.
Sunday’s spectacle followed four days of suspense over the formation of the new government after the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) fell 10 seats short of a simple majority in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, where the majority mark is 118. Vijay was eventually able to form the government after the Congress, Left Front, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) extended support to the party.
