Made on a modest budget, Obsession has emerged as an unexpected global cinematic sensation, with the horror-drama also finding a strong audience in India. Director Curry Barker reacted to the film’s surprising performance in India in an interview with Variety India, saying he had not expected Obsession to become a major success.
The film’s run in the country, where it has collected over Rs 78 crore, as reported by Sacnilk, has also fuelled intense online debates, fan theories and memes. Barker emphasised that the scale of the response, in India and elsewhere, had taken him by surprise.
“I definitely did not expect Obsession to be a big hit in India. I didn’t expect it to be a big hit anywhere, really. You hope and dream that your movie is successful and that it resonates with people. But I can’t believe what it’s doing. I mean, we made this movie for nothing. I just can’t believe that it’s getting the recognition that it’s getting,” he said.
Obsession has crossed $200 million globally, becoming Focus Features’ biggest film of all time. According to industry tracker BoxOfficeMojo, the film has earned $234,501,640 (Rs 2240 crore) worldwide in 26 days since its US release on May 15.
The film has already become the studio’s highest-grossing title in the domestic market, where it stands at $161 million. Its latest milestone comes after a strong fourth weekend, when it fell just 7 per cent and collected $25.6 million, setting records for the best fourth-weekend hold for a horror film and the biggest fourth weekend ever for the genre.
The supernatural horror film follows Bear, a lonely employee at a music shop who uses a supernatural toy to make his friend Nikki fall in love with him, only for the wish to turn violent as she gradually loses her sense of self. As the film continues its theatrical run, its record-setting box-office performance has underlined both its global appeal and the scale of Barker’s breakout success.
