Vettuvam glimpse: Pa Ranjith teases a dystopian world of sport, power and survival

Pa Ranjith has unveiled the first teaser of Vettuvam, outlining a world shaped by sport, land and destruction. The glimpse points to a struggle for power and survival across timelines, with Mallakhamba at its centre.

Pa Ranjith’s upcoming Tamil film Vettuvam has unveiled its glimpse, offering an intense glimpse into a world where a traditional sport could determine power, survival and the future of an entire community. The first glimpse introduces Arya, Sobhita Dhulipala, Dinesh, Shabeer Kallarakkal and Kalaiyarasan as they undergo rigorous training in Mallakhamba, the ancient Indian pole sport, for a story that blends action, sci-fi, environmental themes and a central land conflict.

The glimpse takes audiences into the world of Vettuvam through behind-the-scenes footage of the actors training extensively in Mallakhamba and self-defence techniques. Pa Ranjith’s voice-over explains that the sport is not merely part of the film’s action sequences but is tied to a larger competition that will determine who gets a position of power.

"A competition will unfold in the film. Whoever emerges victorious in this sport will be assigned a powerful position. Who will come out as the winner? Will all of the destruction begin a new way of life? That's what Vettuvam will be about," Ranjith said in the teaser.

"I have built a new world in this film, and I hope the audience will like it. The film is packed with action and adventure. I have made this film as a blend of action and sci-fi, and I have high hopes that it will connect with the audience. We are planning to give viewers a completely new experience," he had said.

The filmmaker also reveals that every actor underwent intensive training for the sport, giving the teaser a strong physicality as Arya, Sobhita, Dinesh, Shabeer and Kalaiyarasan prepare for the competition. The film's story, meanwhile, appears to move between the past, present and a future shaped by the consequences of environmental destruction, with a land conflict forming its central thread.

Vettuvam features an ensemble cast including Mime Gopi, Guru Somasundaram, John Vijay, Sai Dheena, Anand Saami, Harish Uthaman, Lizzy, Lingesh Prem Kumar, Kavitha Bharathi, Arjun, Santha Kumar, Melody, Manisha, Nimmy, Raphael, Vikram, Naveen and Prakash.

Co-written by Santhosh Narayanan Chenthilkumar, Vettuvam is produced by Pa Ranjith’s Neelam Productions. Roopesh Shaji is the cinematographer, while GV Prakash Kumar is composing the music.

Known for films such as Kaala and Sarpatta Parambarai, Ranjith last directed Thangalaan, starring Vikram. He had earlier described Vettuvam as a new-world action-adventure film blending action and sci-fi.

Vettuvam is aiming for a theatrical release in 2026.
