According to reports, Rajinikanth and director Mani Ratnam are set to reunite for an upcoming film, marking their first collaboration in 33 years. Fans are eagerly awaiting an official announcement, which is expected to be made on Rajinikanth’s birthday, December 12. This potential reunion comes after a 36-year gap for Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan, who are working together again on the film Thug Life following their 1987 hit Nayakan. If the reports are accurate, the collaboration with Rajinikanth will be the director’s second time working with the superstar since their 1991 blockbuster Thalapathi.

Thalapathi, which starred Rajinikanth and Mammootty, was a critically acclaimed and commercially successful film that adapted the Mahabharata’s friendship between Karna and Duryodhana to a contemporary setting. Rajinikanth portrayed Surya, representing Karna, while Mammootty played Devaraj, representing Duryodhana. The film also starred Arvind Swami, Amrish Puri, and Bhanupriya, among others.
