Actor Robert Downey Jr is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom, six years after his character Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, died in Avengers: Endgame. Actor Tom Holland has now shared that Downey personally told him about his return in Avengers:Doomsday.

In a recent interview ahead of Spider-Man: Brand New Day release, Holland said Downey called him to reveal the news. Recalling the moment, Holland said, "I think I hung up and said to Zendaya, 'Downey’s back'."

Holland also spoke about his bond with Downey, saying the two have remained close even after their shared chapter in the MCU. He said they stay in touch regularly and speak on the phone from time to time.

Sharing more about the call, the 30-year-old added, "Yes, he just called me. In fact, I caught up with him on the phone a couple of days ago. We usually catch up from time to time. He got in touch and just told me. And it’s very exciting."

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Doomsday features an ensemble cast—including Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm—facing an unprecedented multiversal collapse. Prepared as the definitive anchor of the MCU's Phase Six, the project represents a major creative pivot for Marvel Studios, shifting away from previous storylines to position Doctor Doom as the franchise's ultimate, multi-dimensional antagonist.

Avengers: Doomsday has incorporated several prominent MCU factions, with major characters like Sam Wilson’s Captain America (Anthony Mackie) and the Thunderbolts joining forces alongside multi-universe mutant variants.

Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday is set for a theatrical release in India on December 18.
