A fresh spell of summer storms is set to sweep across north India on April 28, bringing dust storms, gusty winds and scattered rainfall, but the big question remains: how much rain will actually reach the ground?
According to the latest outlook, storm activity is expected to build from late afternoon, with dust storms and thundershowers developing across parts of Rajasthan, Haryana and the Delhi NCR region.
Areas including Chandigarh and Punjab are also likely to see weather activity between 4 pm and midnight.
Forecasters indicate that these storms could bring short bursts of moderate rain, with isolated pockets experiencing brief heavy showers. However, the rainfall is expected to be uneven and scattered, meaning not all areas will benefit equally.
In many places, strong winds and dust may dominate, with rain remaining light or fleeting.
Further east, parts of Uttar Pradesh are likely to experience dust storms followed by rain later in the evening, with activity continuing into the early hours of the next day. Meteorologists caution that city-specific timings may vary, as storm systems evolve rapidly once they form and intensify through the afternoon heat.
These pre-monsoon storms are typical during late April and May, driven by rising temperatures and atmospheric instability. They often provide temporary relief from heat but can also disrupt daily life with reduced visibility, flight delays, and power outages.
The key uncertainty, however, is rainfall distribution. While cloud build-up and thunder activity may be widespread, actual precipitation tends to be patchy. Some areas could see sharp downpours lasting a few minutes, while neighbouring regions may experience little more than dust-laden winds.
Residents are advised to remain cautious during the evening hours, especially in open areas or while commuting, as sudden strong winds can pose risks. Weather experts say more precise forecasts will emerge once storm systems begin forming later in the day.
For now, the outlook suggests an active evening ahead, but not necessarily a soaking one.
