A glimpse of Hrithik Roshan from the Alpha trailer

YRF plays its Hrithik Roshan card in Alpha trailer. Desperate move or masterstroke?

The Alpha trailer revealed Hrithik Roshan's cameo alongside Alia Bhatt and Sharvari's Spy Universe debut. The move has shifted attention from scepticism around the film to speculation over what YRF may still be holding back.

  • YRF rarely confirms Spy Universe surprises before release
  • Alpha introduces Alia Bhatt and Sharvari as the franchise's first female spies
  • Dhurandhar's success has intensified debate over what viewers expect from spy dramas

The Alpha trailer dropped on Wednesday, and so did the giant Hrithik Roshan cameo. That one reveal created more buzz than the trailer itself - and that was probably the intention all along.

In Alpha, Alia Bhatt and Sharvari join YRF's coveted Spy Universe as its first female spies. While much of the film is still under wraps – except perhaps the story, because the trailer gives away far too much – Hrithik's appearance is now out in the open, in what feels like a rather unusual move from the production house.

If you look at YRF's track record, it has rarely revealed its big star cameos from the Spy Universe films. Even when fans correctly guessed them, the studio never cared to confirm anything. If anything, it often urged audiences not to reveal twists and special appearances on social media.

So what changed this time?

Alpha arrives at a particularly interesting moment for YRF. The film has been under scrutiny ever since the phenomenal success of Dhurandhar, Aditya Dhar's spy franchise, which has reignited conversations around what audiences want from the genre. As the Ranveer Singh-starrer gained traction at the box office, so did the chatter about what makes an effective spy thriller.

For years, YRF's spy films have thrived on style, scale, glamour and glossy faces. They are polished entertainers that often prioritise action and romance over geopolitics or grounded national-security conflicts. Dhurandhar, however, appears to have shifted audience's expectations, changing how many viewers now look at the spy-thriller genre in India.

That puts Alpha in a tricky position.

Not only is it arriving in the aftermath of Dhurandhar's box-office explosion, it also carries the burden of convincing audiences about Alia Bhatt as an action star. Despite her acting credentials, she has long faced criticism for being Bollywood's most prominent nepotism beneficiary, and many have openly questioned whether she fits a larger-than-life action role.

The teaser, released earlier this month, only amplified some of that scepticism.

Which is why Hrithik's cameo – and a full glimpse of it at that – feels like a calculated move. Almost overnight, the conversation shifted. Alpha was no longer just Alia Bhatt's entry into the Spy Universe. It became the film where Hrithik Roshan's Kabir Dhaliwal from War shows up.

And that's what makes the move feel both desperate and smart.

Desperate because YRF has broken one of its own unwritten rules by revealing a major surprise in advance. Smart because it instantly changed the narrative around the film and gave even sceptics a reason to pay attention. For those who had already written off Alpha after Dhurandhar, the film suddenly became a lot more interesting.

It also opens the door to another possibility.

What if Hrithik isn't the biggest surprise in the film? What if YRF revealed this cameo because there is something even bigger waiting in the wings? Maybe there isn't. Maybe this is the ace up its sleeve. But by showing Kabir now, the studio has successfully planted that question in audiences' minds.

And that just could be the biggest victory of all.

Cameo or not, Alpha is back in the conversation, and this time, for reasons beyond the doubts surrounding it.
