Actor Maanvi Gagroo said that she was once offered more than Rs 1 lakh to compromise when she was trying to enter Bollywood. Gagroo said the message came at a time when she was still finding her way in the industry and did not immediately understand what it meant. She also spoke about how difficult it can be for outsiders to navigate the system, and reflected on the wider debate around nepotism in Hindi cinema.
Speaking on the Two Girls & Two Cups podcast, she recalled receiving a message early in her career that left her disturbed and confused. “I remember getting a text saying, ‘You will get more than Rs 1 lakh if you are willing to compromise," the actor said.
The 40-year-old actor added that it happened at the beginning of her career, and that she replied to the message because she did not know what “compromise” meant in that context.
“I replied, saying, ‘compromise?’ because I did not know. I showed it to a casting director who was like a mentor. He was like, ‘Just delete, block, delete him.’ I was impressed. People usually think there should be no proof. They will say things on the phone so nobody can report them. But this was ‘Rs 1 lakh plus compromise’ in a text,” she said.
Gagroo further shared that she thought the word referred to money or budgeting. She said she initially believed it meant whether she would be willing to compromise on the budget, and joked that she thought it might be a financial matter, “like GST”. “Rs 1 lakh plus GST, complimentary something maybe. Plus compromise. I did not know. This is what happens to non-nepo kids. Navigating all of this is not easy,” she said.
On outsiders and nepotism
Despite that experience, Gagroo said she stayed focused on her work and continued to build her career on her own terms. She also said that star children do enter the industry with certain advantages.
“Star kids definitely have access. They can meet people more easily, they know the ecosystem and they have a network. But eventually, audiences decide who stays,” she said.
According to her, outsiders often have to work harder to get noticed, secure auditions and build relationships in the industry. Reflecting on her own journey, she said she focused on improving her craft and choosing roles that challenged her as an actor.
Career so far
Gagroo has built a strong presence in films and web series over the years. She has been praised for her work in projects such as TVF Pitchers, Tripling, Four More Shots Please! and Half CA.
