Shakira stuns in a Banarasi brocade creation by Gaurav Gupta

Shakira brought her signature she-wolf energy on stage but this time in Indian creations. The global pop star stunned in custom Gaurav Gupta couture, featuring rich Banarasi brocade.

When it comes to Shakira’s fashion game, you know it’s going to be anything but predictable. For her latest stage performance, the legendary singer brought a little sparkle, a little drama and a whole lot of Banaras to the stage.

For a concert in Madrid, the global pop star appeared on the stage in a custom Gaurav Gupta couture. She wore a sculptural gold-toned breastplate with a handwoven silk Banarasi brocade skirt.

Gaurav Gupta sculpted the brass breastplate, dubbed the Lunar Wolf, around the image of a she-wolf — a symbol closely associated with the singer. Ever since she released her song 'She Wolf' in 2009, the idea has become part of her artistry.

And this wasn’t the first time she turned to Gaurav Gupta to make a statement. Last year, she wore a similar iteration in a stunning shade of blue. So, if you’re a Shakira fan and experiencing a little deja vu, you’re not imagining it.

500 hours, 10 artisans and 1 iconic dress

Shakira's attire in gold was nothing short of a spectacle.

The handwoven silk brocade from Banaras brought a touch of India’s rich textile heritage to Shakira’s global stage. The futuristic breastplate combined with the age-old traditional Indian textile served as the perfect example of what modernity and tradition look like together.

And this was no quick couture job. The creation took around 500 hours of craftsmanship, with a team of 10 artisans working on the ensemble.

The breastplate, crafted in brass and rendered in gold, also continues to be Gupta’s signature exploration of metal as a sculptural medium.

On Shakira, it almost worked like armour — rigid, striking and designed to command attention — while the softer Banarasi skirt brought movement and texture to the silhouette.

Stunning is the word. Period.

Ever felt a little conscious about buying the same dress in another colour? Relax, Shakira does it too! Consider that your cue to stop overthinking it. Interestingly, she previously wore a similar custom creation by the designer for the Rio de Janeiro leg of the world tour.

For the opening night of her world tour, the queen of pop sensation wore the Lunar Wolf breastplate with an ocean-wave-sculpted silk organza skirt.

Shakira’s tryst with Indian designers goes way back. She often wears Gaurav Gupta's creations but that's not all. In 2025, she collaborated with Anamika Khanna, wearing a sultry red ensemble adorned with shimmering Swarovski crystals. The fluid drapes and body-skimming silhouette perfectly complemented Shakira’s signature energy on stage.

With Shakira’s tour set to wrap up in October, the question is: will there be more Indian fashion moments before the final bow? We’re certainly keeping an eye out.
