Mirzapur: The Movie is creating full-on bhaukaal at the box office. The gangster drama, starring Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Divyenndu, has continued its strong run through the opening weekend, recording a significant jump on Sunday. The Gurmmeet Singh directorial has now inched closer to the Rs 100 crore mark in India, with the return of Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu Pandit and Munna Tripathi proving to be a major draw for audiences.
According to trade website Sacnilk, the film earned Rs 36 crore nett in India on Day 3. It witnessed a 12.5 per cent jump from Saturday’s Rs 32 crore collection. On Sunday, the gangster drama ran across 11,344 shows and recorded 60.6 per cent occupancy.
The film opened with Rs 25.75 crore on Friday before collecting Rs 32 crore on Saturday. With Rs 36 crore coming in on Sunday, Mirzapur: The Movie has earned Rs 93.75 crore in its opening weekend. It is now just a few crores away from entering the Rs 100 crore club in India.
The film has also put up a strong show in the overseas market. Mirzapur: The Movie earned Rs 7 crore on Day 3 internationally, taking its worldwide collection to Rs 132.35 crore in just three days.
What makes the film’s box-office run particularly noteworthy is that it does not feature a conventional Bollywood superstar. Instead, the big-screen adaptation of the popular web series has managed to draw audiences largely on the strength of its established fan base and the popularity of its characters.
The film’s success also marks a significant moment for the Mirzapur franchise, which has become one of India’s most popular streaming properties.
Mirzapur: The Movie is directed by Gurmmeet Singh and stars Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu, Jitendra Kumar, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Shweta Tripathi, Rasika Dugal, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Ravi Kishan, among others. Jitendra Kumar plays Bablu Pandit in the film, replacing Vikrant Massey, who played the character in the original series.
The movie released in theatres on September 4.
