  • Koffee With Karan S9 premiered with Salman Khan and Karisma Kapoor reunion
  • Salman quickly guessed Karisma as the mystery rapid-fire guest
  • Their easy camaraderie brought nostalgic Bollywood memories

The premiere episode of Koffee With Karan Season 9 had plenty going for it. There were Salman Khan's cheeky one-liners, Karan Johar's familiar attempts to get his guests to spill the beans, and the promise of some juicy revelations. But the biggest surprise, especially for '90s Bollywood fans, was Karisma Kapoor's appearance alongside her longtime friend and frequent co-star, Salman.

And just like that, the episode became a little trip down memory lane.

Salman took barely any time to guess the identity of the mystery guest Karan had planned for the rapid-fire round. All KJo had to reveal was that the person had worked with Salman in around 13 films. The actor immediately caught on.

"You might as well have given away the name," he joked.

It was a fitting beginning to an episode that stop feeling like a celebrity interview and turned into two old friends catching up, trading stories and laughing at memories that only they could fully appreciate. Their easy camaraderie was the real star of the show, reminding viewers of a time when Salman and Karisma were among Bollywood's most entertaining on-screen pairs.

There is something wonderfully effortless about Salman and Karisma sharing a frame. They don't appear to be trying to impress anyone or design a deliberate moment for the cameras. They simply seem comfortable in each other's company, and that ease makes their interactions all the more enjoyable.

Their conversation was peppered with memories of working together, shooting without the comforts of vanity vans, travelling for films, and bonding over their shared love for chocolates. They also spoke about the personal advice they had offered each other over the years, only for it to become clear that neither had necessarily followed the other's wisdom.

At one point, Salman joked that Karisma had never approved of any of his romantic partners. Karisma was quick to protest, telling him to take the remark back. The exchange was playful, spontaneous and full of the kind of familiarity that comes from knowing someone for decades.

And then there was the moment when Salman cheekily suggested that Karisma was lying about their friendship being "platonic." His mischievous remark caught her off guard, leaving her laughing as he continued to play the fool. It was classic Salman: teasing, grinning and enjoying the reaction he had managed to provoke.

What made these moments work was that neither seemed overly conscious of being watched. They laughed freely, interrupted each other and slipped easily into old anecdotes. There was no awkwardness, no need for elaborate explanations, just two people who have known each other long enough to be completely themselves.

Of pranks, World Cup finals and the good old days

One of the most entertaining stories came when Karisma recalled an incident from the sets of Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge.

The two had just finished working on Biwi No. 1, and Karisma was particularly invested in the film's success. It was a David Dhawan comedy, and she was hoping it would perform well at the box office. Salman, however, decided to have some fun at her expense.

He approached her with a long face and told her that the film had not opened well because it had been released on the day of the World Cup final (May 28, 1999). Karisma took his words seriously and began crying, at which point Salman and the others on the set, including Dhawan, burst into laughter.

It was a prank that could have happened only between people who were comfortable enough with one another to let their guard down. Looking back, the anecdote captured the spirit of their working relationship: a little mischief, a lot of laughter and memories that have clearly stayed for long.

And the films themselves explain why the reunion struck such a chord. From Andaz Apna Apna and Biwi No. 1 to Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge, Judwaa, Chal Mere Bhai and Hum Saath-Saath Hain, Salman and Karisma gave audiences a string of memorable performances across comedy, romance and family entertainment.

Their pairing had a particular rhythm. Salman brought his unmistakable screen presence and comic timing, while Karisma matched him with her energy, expressions and impeccable sense of humour. They could bicker, flirt, exchange ridiculous one-liners or be part of a larger family ensemble, and the combination rarely felt forced.

That chemistry wasn't confined to the screen, either. Watching them reminisce on Koffee With Karan made it easy to understand why their collaborations worked so well. They appeared to enjoy each other's company just as much off-screen as their characters often did on it.

Fans are ready for a Salman-Karisma reunion

The affection for the duo was evident on social media, where viewers celebrated the reunion and the nostalgia it brought with it.

One X user wrote, "I’ve never seen this level of comfort between friends and actors & it looked so real. You can tell they mean alot to eo. And they are proud of eo. 36 years. Salman khan and #KarismaKapoor really hope directors bring them back on a beautiful family drama/thriller. #SalmanKhan (sic)."

Another fan was equally delighted, writing, "salman and karisma gracing kwk together oh my parents really said let us show these kids how its done. SEATED (sic)."

A third user celebrated the nostalgia of seeing them together again, calling them one of Bollywood's underrated on-screen pairs and praising their chemistry. Another viewer described Salman and Karisma as a wonderful duo whose charisma and comic rapport had helped define their childhood.

It is easy to see why the reunion resonated. For viewers who grew up watching their films, Salman and Karisma are part of a particular Bollywood memory: colourful comedies, big family entertainers, catchy songs and a style of mainstream Hindi cinema that knew how to have fun without taking itself too seriously.

Of course, the episode left fans wanting more. A new Salman-Karisma film, perhaps a family entertainer with a generous dose of comedy, would be a welcome throwback. The two have already shown that they know how to make audiences laugh together; there is no reason they cannot do it again.

Until that happens, this Koffee With Karan reunion will do nicely. It is streaming on JioHotstar.
