- Toxic is likely to premiere online a month after its theatrical release
- No official OTT release confirmation yet from the makers
- The film's box office dropped over 95 per cent in the second week after a strong opening
Yash's Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups is reportedly set to arrive on OTT just weeks after its theatrical release, giving audiences an early chance to watch the much-discussed Kannada film from home. According to a report by 123Telugu, the Geetu Mohandas directorial is expected to premiere on ZEE5 on September 25.
The OTT release date and platform have not been officially confirmed by the makers or ZEE5 yet. An official announcement is awaited.
The reported early digital premiere comes after Toxic witnessed a sharp decline in its theatrical collections following a strong opening. The film raked in Rs 239.30 crore in its first week, but its earnings dropped dramatically in the second week, when it collected just Rs 8.94 crore. That represents a fall of more than 95 per cent week-on-week.
The film's dwindling theatrical presence was also reflected in its show count. Toxic opened with 24,579 shows across India on Day 1. By Day 21, the number had fallen to 248, marking a decline of more than 99 per cent from its opening-day show count.
The film had arrived in theatres amid considerable anticipation, with Yash returning to the big screen after the success of his KGF films. Directed by Geetu Mohandas, Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups is set in a bygone-era Goa and revolves around a powerful drug cartel operating amid the state's glamorous exterior.
Yash plays Raya, a gangster caught up in the world of organised crime, while Nayanthara plays his sister. The actor also appears in a dual role, with his second character, Ticket, being Raya's son.
If the reported September 25 OTT date holds, Toxic will make its streaming debut less than a month after its theatrical release - significantly earlier than the conventional theatrical-to-digital window for many big-ticket films. For now, viewers will have to wait for an official confirmation from ZEE5 or the makers.
