The Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island erupted within its summit caldera, Kaluapele in the early hours of December 23, 2024, at approximately 2:20 AM local time.
This marks the first eruption since a three-month hiatus and has already drawn significant attention from locals and tourists alike.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the eruption produced spectacular lava fountains that reached heights of up to 300 feet.
By 5:30 AM, around 500 acres of lava had covered the caldera floor, creating a dramatic landscape that has captivated onlookers. The National Park Service reported that the volcanic activity was confined to the caldera, ensuring safety for visitors at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which remains open around the clock.
Experts described the eruption as “substantial” and noted its rapid onset. This event is significant as it marks Kilauea's fifth eruption in the summit region since December 2020.
The lava flows have already overtaken a previous lava lake formed during earlier eruptions.
As of late morning, scientists observed that volcanic activity began to diminish, but by then, over one square mile surrounding Kilauea had been impacted. The thickness of the lava is estimated to be about one yard in certain areas.
This eruption has not only provided a stunning visual display but also serves as a reminder of Kilauea's ongoing geological activity. The USGS continues to monitor the situation closely and has set up a livestream for those unable to witness the event in person.
Kilauea remains one of the most active volcanoes in the world, drawing crowds eager to experience its natural wonders during this holiday season.
