Music industry titan Clive Davis, the legendary executive credited with discovering and shaping the careers of some of the biggest names in music, died on Monday at the age of 94. The cause of death hasn’t been revealed.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern music, Davis played a pivotal role in launching and nurturing the careers of artistes such as Whitney Houston, Bruce Springsteen, Santana, Alicia Keys, Janis Joplin and Barry Manilow.

Known for his sharp business instincts and exceptional ear for talent, Davis enjoyed a career spanning more than six decades. Music icon Aretha Franklin once described him as "the greatest record man of all time."

Born in Brooklyn on April 4, 1932, Davis initially pursued a legal career after graduating from Harvard Law School. His entry into the music business came when he joined Columbia Records as legal counsel before rising through the ranks to become president of CBS Records in 1966.

Despite having no formal background in music, Davis quickly developed a reputation for identifying groundbreaking talent. He famously signed Janis Joplin after witnessing her performance at the historic Monterey Pop Festival and later worked closely with artistes including Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, Bruce Springsteen and Miles Davis.

After leaving CBS Records in 1973, Davis founded Arista Records, which became home to a host of successful artistes, including Whitney Houston, Dionne Warwick, Barry Manilow and Alicia Keys.

Among all the stars he championed, Whitney Houston remained perhaps his most celebrated discovery. Davis played a key role in transforming her into one of the best-selling artistes of all time, helping shape a career that left an indelible mark on global music.

His influence extended across genres, from rock and pop to jazz and R&B, making him one of the most respected and enduring executives in entertainment history.
