Shoba Chandrasekhar: Vijay's mother sang his future before it happened
After TVK's big win in 2026, Shoba Chandrasekhar sang a line from a song she had recorded for her son Vijay's 2005 film, Sivakasi. The moment turned attention to her long role as the quiet force behind his career and life.

- Shoba Chandrasekhar built her own career as singer, writer, producer and director
- She married SA Chandrasekhar in 1973 and later raised Vijay
- In 2020, she opposed the unauthorised party launched in Vijay's name
She sang the line in 2005. It came true in 2026 - Ezhainga pazhainga nenachiputta, naalaiku neengalum CM-u dan.
The line is from the superhit track Kodambakkam Area in Vijay's 2005 film Sivakasi, and it seems to have foreshadowed his future. The line loosely translates to: "If the poor decide, you become the CM tomorrow."
This line from the song is special for so many reasons. Firstly, Shoba Chandrasekhar is Vijay's mother. Secondly, the line is now a reality.
On May 4, hours after Vijay's TVK secured a big win against DMK and AIADMK in its first-ever Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections, Shoba Chandrasekhar and Vijay's cousins broke into an impromptu performance, singing Kodambakkam Area track. Iconic, isn't it?

If Vijay's father, filmmaker SA Chandrasekhar, was instrumental in supporting his son in his early days in the film industry, it was his mother, Shoba Chandrasekhar who stood tall as the silent pillar behind him, withstanding everything.
Who is Shoba Chandrasekhar?
But Shoba Chandrasekhar is not just Vijay's mother. She has carved an identity for herself by pursuing her singing passion while nurturing her family. She began her career as a singer in a light music troupe, before stepping into the film industry. Shoba has also been credited as a director, producer and writer of several films.
On April 24, 1973, Shoba got married to SA Chandrasekhar and the couple would have two children – son Vijay and daughter Vidya. Their daughter died at the age of two.
Shoba got the opportunity to record her first song — Maharaja Oru Maharani from the film Iru Malargal — even before getting married to SA Chandrasekhar. In her career, she has sung nearly 12 film songs, a sizeable chunk of them for Ilaiyaraaja.
Apart from playback singing, Shoba is deeply involved in Carnatic and devotional music. Her first light classical musical show, Samarpanam, was telecast on Vijay TV in 2003.
As a writer, several of her stories have been adapted by her husband into films. In all, she has written over 50 stories, and also produced around 10 films. Nanbargal and Innisai Mazhai are the two films she directed, with her husband SA Chandrasekhar serving as her associate director — a quiet reversal of their usual dynamic that speaks to the equal creative partnership at the heart of their marriage.
Shoba: The silent pillar behind Vijay
Shoba has been a pillar of support for Vijay on and off the screen. From championing his career to resolving conflicts between father and son, she has been through it all and never complained.
The greatest test of that quiet strength came in 2020, when SA Chandrasekhar registered a political party naming it All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam — without informing either his son or, crucially, his wife. He appointed himself general secretary, Shoba as treasurer, and another relative, Padmanabhan, as president.
Shoba, once she understood what had happened, publicly told the media she had not been properly informed and refused to sign any further papers. Caught between husband and son, she instinctively moved to protect both.
Prior to this, SAC had made several political statements that had indirectly affected Vijay's public standing and ignited rumours about his political entry. Despite clear instructions from Vijay to SAC about refraining from making such statements, this final move — the unauthorised party registration in his name — hurt the actor deeply. He filed a civil lawsuit against his parents and several other members, while publicly announcing he had no connection with the party and urging his fans not to join it on his account.
While speaking to the media, Shoba confirmed that the father and son were not on talking terms. It was a painful position for a woman who had spent her life as the bridge between the two men she loved most. She continued to make amends, quietly, consistently, without drama.
The rift talks grew further when Vijay did not attend his parents' 60th wedding anniversary — an absence that spoke louder than any statement. Yet Shoba did not stop working toward reconciliation. Over time, with her constant and patient effort, father and son found their way back to each other. Both Shoba and SAC attended the audio launch of Vijay's film Varisu in 2023, where Shoba effectively put an end to public speculation about the family rift simply by being there, smiling, together.
Through all of it, Vijay never sidelined his mother. In fact, he built a Sai Baba temple for her in Chennai, personally overseeing its construction — a gesture that said everything about where his loyalties had always quietly remained.
On May 4, as the results came in and TVK's win became undeniable, Shoba Chandrasekhar was at a loss for words. The woman who had sung a line predicting this moment twelve years ago had just one thing to say.
"I'm so happy."
It was SA Chandrasekhar who filled in the rest. Quick as ever, he turned to the cameras and said what perhaps only he could say with the full weight of knowing: "She's not just a mother to Vijay. She's his number one fan."
In the end, this is the Shoba Chandrasekhar story. It is the story of a woman who believed in her son before Tamil Nadu did, who kept the family intact when it was on the verge of falling apart, and who — when the verdict she had sung about twelve years ago finally arrived — smiled and let three words carry the weight of all of it.
