In a Diwali boost to the Tamil film industry, the Tamil Nadu government has released Rs 15.68 crore in subsidies to producers of 224 films. The decision, announced at an event in Chepauk, Chennai, marks the release of funds that had reportedly been pending for seven years. Each selected producer received a cheque of Rs 7 lakh.
Producer T Siva of Amma Creations welcomed the move and thanked Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and Minister Rajmohan Arumugam for ensuring the release of the funds. In a post on X, Siva described the announcement as a Diwali gift for those associated with the film industry.
Sharing his gratitude, he wrote in Tamil, “My heartfelt thanks to the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr Joseph Vijay, for immediately releasing approximately Rs 16 crore in subsidies for 224 films, a matter that had been pending for seven years—thereby bringing new hope and a fresh beginning to the lives of these 224 producers. I also extend my sincere gratitude to the Honourable Minister, Mr. @imrajmohan, for his dedicated and swift efforts in making this happen!”
The producer further highlighted how the financial assistance could help families dependent on the film industry. “This is not merely a subsidy; it is a Diwali gift for many families associated with the film industry! 90 per cent of the beneficiaries are individuals who lost their livelihoods due to film production. There is no doubt that this support will spark a revival in their lives. On behalf of the 224 producers and their families, a million thanks!” he added.
The subsidy was distributed by Minister Rajmohan at the Chepauk event. The films selected for the grant were produced between 2015 and 2022, following recommendations from a selection committee headed by retired Justice SK Krishnan, according to a report by ETV Bharat.
Siva, who has backed films such as Deiva Vaakku, Aravindhan, Saroja and Aravaan under Amma Creations, called the government's decision a significant step towards supporting producers and their families.
The scheme aims to encourage the production of low-budget Tamil films, particularly those that address socially relevant subjects. Speaking at the event, Rajmohan reportedly cited Bharathiraja's Karuththamma (1994), which raised awareness about female infanticide, as an example of cinema that can challenge social evils. He also praised producers who prioritise meaningful storytelling alongside commercial considerations.
The minister further said that state awards for Tamil cinema would, going forward, be presented solely on the basis of merit and honesty.
