Inside Toxic vs Hai Jawani Toh clash: No Dhurandhar 2, but box office test continues

Yash's Toxic may have avoided a clash with Dhurandhar 2, but its new release date could spell trouble for Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. One strategic move has shifted things at the box office, and not every film may survive the impact.

In Short

  • Toxic shifted its release to June 4, clashing with Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai
  • Toxic, starring Yash, is expected to dominate the box office on a big scale
  • Hai Jawani..., a mid-budget romcom, may struggle with screens and audience

Yash's Toxic: A Fairytale for Grownups may have successfully avoided a major box office clash with Dhurandhar: The Revenge on March 19. But the move might end up creating trouble for another Bollywood film: Varun Dhawan's Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai.

The Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur starrer had quietly locked June 5 for its theatrical release. That plan changed when KVN Productions announced that Toxic will now arrive in cinemas on June 4. With just a day separating the two films, a fresh box office clash is now on the horizon.

The scale of the two films makes the situation even more interesting.

Toxic, headlined by Yash, is one of the most anticipated Indian films of the year. Industry expectations suggest it could open big and potentially challenge some of the biggest box office records, including those of Aditya Dhar's Dhurandhar: The Revenge and Allu Arjun's Pushpa films.

Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, on the other hand, is a mid-budget romantic comedy directed by David Dhawan. The film banks on the familiar appeal of a light-hearted Bollywood entertainer. So far, there has been little promotional material from the Varun Dhawan film. In contrast, Toxic has already generated significant buzz around its scale and action-heavy appeal. With its release scheduled a day earlier, the Yash film is expected to dominate the conversation in its opening week.

That leaves an obvious question: where does that place a traditional Bollywood romcom releasing almost at the same time?

Films like Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai typically rely on a clean theatrical window. They work best when audiences looking for lighter entertainment have a clear choice at the cinemas. A weekend already dominated by a massive action spectacle may not provide that room.

Even if Toxic falls short of the towering expectations around it, its opening weekend and first-week collections are likely to be strong enough to occupy most screens. Under those circumstances, a smaller film could struggle to find space.

This is also why the earlier clash between Toxic and Dhurandhar: The Revenge was being viewed as a battle of equals. Two large-scale films competing for the same weekend could have balanced the marketplace in a different way. By stepping away from that date, both big-ticket titles have effectively ensured a more comfortable solo run.

But the ripple effects of that decision continue elsewhere.

Ustaad Bhagat Singh vs Dhurandhar 2

While the Ranveer Singh-led Dhurandhar: The Revenge may have avoided the Toxic clash, it still won't enjoy a completely free run in the South. Ustaad Bhagat Singh, starring Pawan Kalyan, is set to release around the same time. Though smaller in scale, the film carries weight in the Telugu market. Kalyan's popularity in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, strengthened further by his position as the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, gives the film strong regional pull.

That means Dhurandhar: The Revenge could still face competition in the Telugu belt, even if the scale of the clash is far smaller than what it would have been with Toxic.

One release shift and the entire box office battlefield has been reshaped. Which one are you picking first now?
