Vetri prophecy? How Vijay and his father's first film predicted TVK's historic win
From a child actor in Vetri to leading Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam to victory, Vijay's journey feels almost cinematic. The relationship between his 1984 debut film and his 2026 political triumph has now become part of Tamil Nadu's political folklore.

- SA Chandrasekhar introduced Vijay to cinema with Vetri
- Their film Naalaiya Theerpu failed, but the father-son team kept moving
- Chandrasekhar recalled Vijay once saying he would become Tamil Nadu Chief Minister
Forty-two years before Vijay led his party to a historic electoral victory in Tamil Nadu, he had already appeared in a film called Vetri. At the time, nobody could have imagined that the word would one day define his political destiny.
In 1984, a nine-year-old Vijay faced the camera for the first time in Vetri, directed by his father SA Chandrasekhar. Decades later, that same word silently returned to shape the identity of his political party: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
The spelling changed slightly, but the meaning did not. In Tamil, 'Vetri' means victory. And now, after TVK emerged victorious in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections and prepared to form the government, Vijay's journey feels less like coincidence and more like a story that had been writing itself for decades.
The link between Vetri and TVK
The connection is impossible to ignore once you see it. Vijay's first appearance on screen came in Vetri, a crime-action drama starring Vijayakanth. The film followed a college student accused of murder, with young Vijay playing the childhood version of the lead character. At the time, it was just a child actor's debut in his father's film. Today, it looks symbolic.
Because the middle word in Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam carries the same meaning that launched Vijay's screen life over four decades ago: victory. Even Vijay's own name translates to victory or triumph. Somewhere between Vetri, Vijay and Vettri Kazhagam, cinema and politics began echoing each other.
And now, with TVK's rise, that echo has become history.
A father who introduced him to the world
Long before politics entered the frame, Vijay's public life was shaped almost entirely by his father.
After Vetri, the young actor appeared in several films directed by SA Chandrasekhar, including Kudumbam, Naan Sigappu Manithan and Vasantha Raagam. Cinema became the space where father and son built Vijay's identity together, one film at a time. Years later, Chandrasekhar launched him as a lead actor in Naalaiya Theerpu. Vijay was just 18.
The film failed commercially, but the father did not stop believing in the son. The two continued collaborating on films like Senthoorapandi, Rasigan, Deva and Vishnu, slowly shaping the screen image that would later become political capital.
"I will become Chief Minister"
Over the years, Vijay transformed from actor to phenomenon. But according to SA Chandrasekhar, the political ambition had been visible much earlier. Speaking after TVK's victory, the filmmaker recalled the confidence with which Vijay had once told him: "I will be the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu."
For a father who introduced his son to the cinema at nine, the moment carried emotional weight beyond politics. Chandrasekhar described the result as "historical," but what stood out more was the way he spoke about Vijay's bond with people: not as voters but as family.
According to him, women saw Vijay as a son, youngsters treated him like an elder brother, and older supporters looked at him like a grandson. The term "Anna," which fans have used for years while addressing Vijay, became more than a title. It became the emotional foundation of his political identity. That emotional connection would eventually become one of TVK's biggest strengths.
There is something almost cinematic about where Vijay's journey has landed.
A child actor begins his career in a film called Vetri. His name itself means victory. Decades later, he forms a political party with "Vettri" in its title. Then, he wins the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections and prepares to become Chief Minister. Some stories are written through strategy, others seem written through symbolism.
For Vijay, the link between a 1984 film and a 2026 political victory has now become part of his larger mythology: the story of a superstar whose journey moved from the screen to the state, from Vetri to victory itself.
