Yami Gautam spent 4 months learning Quran for Shazia Bano role: Haq director

Filmmaker Suparn S Varma opened up about the extensive research that went into making Haq. He revealed that the team spent nearly a year and a half understanding Islamic law to bring authenticity to the story, while lead actor Yami Gautam also learnt the Holy Quran to prepare for her role.

In a recent conversation with BBC Asian Network, Suparn spoke about the preparation process behind the film and praised Yami’s commitment to her character.

He shared, "We spent almost a year and a half understanding Islamic law," adding that Yami had learnt the Holy Quran for the role.

"I literally had Yami learnt the Quran. She spent four months understanding the dialect, the way we are using Quran," he said.

The director said the research process was particularly important given the current climate of misinformation.

“Everybody has information, you don't know whether it's right or wrong. In that space, I wanted Haq to be a voice of reason," he said.

In Haq, Yami plays Shazia Bano, a woman dealing with personal and legal challenges in 1970s India. Her character takes a stand after her husband remarries and refuses to provide her financial support.

Produced by Junglee Pictures in association with Insomnia Films and Baweja Studios, the film explores themes of gender, justice and personal dignity.

Following its theatrical release in November 2025, Haq premiered on Netflix on January 2, 2026.
