Alpha box office Day 2: Alia Bhatt's film inches closer to Rs 40 crore worldwide

Alia Bhatt's Alpha has inched closer to the Rs 40-crore mark worldwide after registering a modest jump in collections on its first Saturday. The YRF Spy Universe film has now grossed Rs 37.90 crore globally in two days.

Actors Alia Bhatt and Sharvari's Alpha showed a slight improvement at the box office on its second day after registering the lowest opening-day collection in the history of YRF's Spy Universe. Despite opening to mixed-to-negative reviews, the female-led spy thriller witnessed a modest jump in collections on its first Saturday, taking its worldwide gross closer to the Rs 40-crore mark.

According to trade website Sacnilk, Alpha earned Rs 11.50 crore nett in India on Day 2 across 6,882 shows. With this, the film's total India nett collection now stands at Rs 20.75 crore, while its India gross has reached Rs 24.90 crore.

The film also witnessed steady business overseas, collecting Rs 7 crore on its second day. Its total overseas gross now stands at Rs 13 crore, taking the film's worldwide gross collection to Rs 37.90 crore in two days.

Alpha had opened with Rs 9.25 crore nett in India on Friday, registering a worldwide opening of Rs 16.10 crore. While the Day 2 numbers indicate some improvement, the film's overall performance remains below expectations for a YRF Spy Universe title, especially considering it released on 7,534 screens across the country.

The film has also received a mixed response from critics. In its review, India Today rated Alpha with 2.5 stars, praising Alia Bhatt's performance as Sita while pointing out the film's inconsistent screenplay.

A part of the review read, “That unevenness becomes Alpha’s biggest problem. The film keeps piling on twists, and while a few works, the constant barrage eventually becomes exhausting. Instead of building intrigue, the screenplay focusses more on building shock value.”

Directed by Shiv Rawail and written by Uday Chopra, Alpha released in theatres on July 3. The seventh installment in the YRF Spy Universe also stars Sharvari, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol and Dia Mirza in key roles.
