Imagine listening to a long magazine story while cooking dinner, travelling to work, or cleaning your room. That is exactly what Spotify is now trying to make possible. The streaming platform has announced that it is bringing narrated long-form magazine articles to its app, turning written stories into something users can simply press play on.
Spotify subscribers can now access more than 650 long-form articles in English alongside music, podcasts, and audiobooks. The narrated articles will come from well-known publications including Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, Vogue, Variety, Billboard, Vibe, GQ, Wired, Vanity Fair, and Pitchfork.
Each narrated article is under two hours long and has been produced by Spotify’s in-house audiobooks team. The company says these audio articles are meant to sit naturally beside its existing offerings like podcasts and audiobooks.
Spotify also says the narrated stories will use a mix of human narration and digital AI-generated voices. Importantly, the platform notes that any article using digital voice narration will be clearly labelled for listeners.
Who can access Spotify's narrated articles?
The feature is currently included for Premium subscribers as part of Spotify’s existing 15 hours of audiobook listening time per month. Free users, meanwhile, will be able to purchase standalone narrated articles for $1.99, which is roughly Rs 190. India pricing, however, is not clear at the moment.
Spotify says the idea behind narrated articles is to give users a simpler and less intimidating way to try audio storytelling.
“Articles will allow people to trial shorter, less intimidating listens, opening the gateway to explore longer-form listening like books,” the company said.
Spotify’s bigger push into AI audio
The move also comes during a period when Spotify has been rapidly expanding its AI-powered audio features.
In recent weeks, the company has introduced AI-generated podcasts, AI-powered audiobook creation tools for authors, support for AI covers and remixes, and even non-AI additions like fitness content.
Spotify says it sees narrated Articles as a natural extension of the kind of audio content people already come to the platform for. The company also believes its recommendation and personalisation systems can help media publishers and magazine partners reach listeners who are most likely to enjoy their stories.
