After a record-breaking theatrical run, Obsession has finally made its digital debut. The psychological horror film, directed by first-time filmmaker Curry Barker, is now available to rent or buy on premium video-on-demand (PVOD) platforms after grossing over $300 million worldwide at the box office.
However, there's a catch. The film is not yet available to stream for free with a subscription. Instead, viewers can rent or purchase Obsession on OTT. The makers have confirmed that the unrated version of Obsession will be available on Apple TV from June 30. However, it will not be part of the platform's regular subscription catalogue. Instead, the horror hit will debut as a Premium Video-on-Demand (PVOD) title, requiring viewers to rent or purchase the film to watch it.
Internationally, the film is priced at $19.99 for rental and $24.99 for purchase.
The makers are expected to announce the film's full-fledged streaming release later this month, although an official date is yet to be confirmed.
For those who missed watching Obsession in theatres, the digital release comes with added perks, including a behind-the-scenes featurette and an audio commentary by director Barker. The film is also scheduled for a physical release on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD on July 14, and is expected to stream on Peacock at a later date.
Made on a reported budget of just $750,000, Obsession has emerged as one of the year's biggest box-office success stories, grossing over $370 million worldwide. In India, the horror film has earned Rs 97.59 crore gross (Rs 81.95 crore net) after five weeks in theatres and is now less than Rs 2.5 crore away from crossing the coveted Rs 100-crore gross mark.
All about Obsession
Written and directed by 20-year-old YouTuber Curry Barker, Obsession follows Bear (Michael Johnston), a lonely young man who uses a mysterious object known as the One Wish Willow to make his crush, Nikki (Inde Navarrette), fall in love with him.
However, what begins as a seemingly magical romance soon spirals into a chilling nightmare as Nikki's obsession takes a dangerous turn. The film also features Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless and Andy Richter in pivotal roles. Beyond its horror elements, Obsession has also sparked conversations around consent, obsession and male entitlement in relationships.
