  • The film's trailer was unveiled at CinemaCon
  • Robert Downey Jr returned as Doctor Doom in the new film

Marvel Studios closed its CinemaCon showcase with a detailed reveal of Avengers: Doomsday, a film that brings together multiple strands of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) while formally integrating the X-Men into its evolving timeline. Scheduled for a December 18 theatrical release, the studio confirmed that the film remains on track, with no change in release date. This means the film will clash with Timothe Chalamet and Zendaya’s Dune 3.

Trailer breakdown: convergence, conflict, and return

The exclusive footage screened at CinemaCon offered the first look at how these elements come together. While it is not clear when Disney plans to officially release the trailer online, people present the Cinemacon were refrained from recording. However, X is overloaded with reactions and descriptions of the trailer content.

As per the reactions shared on X, the trailer opens at the Xavier Institute, establishing the presence of the X-Men within the MCU framework. A voiceover, attributed to Doom, introduces an impending crisis and references an “unthinkable decision.”

Visuals then move across multiple locations and character groupings:

  • Avengers Tower appears in an altered state, suggesting timeline disruption.
  • The Avengers, Fantastic Four, and Thunderbolts are shown interacting within the same space.
  • Shuri shares screen space with Namor.
  • Mutant characters including Cyclops, Mystique, and Gambit are introduced.

Action sequences highlight multiple confrontations, including a fight between Shang-Chi and Gambit, and large-scale alliances forming between Wakandan forces and the Fantastic Four.

A key moment in the footage features Thor confronting Doom. The attack is stopped, with Thor acknowledging the scale of the threat and suggesting that defeating Doom may require “a miracle.” The sequence concludes with the return of Steve Rogers, who summons Mjolnir, reuniting with Thor.

Ensemble cast and production

Avengers: Doomsday features a large ensemble cast spanning multiple Marvel properties, including Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Simu Liu, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, and others.

The film is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and written by Stephen McFeely. It is produced by Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, and Jonathan Schwartz.

What about Phase 4 of Marvel?

Confirmed to pick up from the events after Avengers: Endgame, the upcoming instalment expands its narrative scope by revisiting earlier timelines, particularly those associated with the X-Men, effectively bridging legacy Marvel properties with its current slate.

Feige confirmed that the film operates across timelines, stating that it “takes place where Endgame left off but also goes back to when it all started with X-Men.” The film will feature characters from three distinct universes, all converging in response to a single large-scale threat.

What does this mean for Phase 4 of Marvel, which did not necessarily meet the desired expectations? Phase 4 films, from Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to Eternals and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, expanded the MCU’s world-building, introducing new heroes, cosmic elements, and the multiverse. However, based on what has been revealed, Doomsday is structured as a large-scale convergence event, drawing from multiple timelines and legacy characters, including the X-Men. Hence, while Phase 4 developments may inform the broader backdrop, the film is designed to function as a self-contained crossover, prioritising its central conflict over continuing every individual storyline introduced in the post-Endgame phase.

It must be noted that Marvel’s Phase 4 generated around $5.7 billion globally across its film slate, with Spider-Man: No Way Home leading at nearly $1.9 billion. Other titles like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever delivered relatively decent numbers, while films such as Eternals and Black Widow performed more modestly. In contrast, Marvel’s Phase 3 was significantly larger in scale, grossing over $13 billion worldwide, with multiple billion-dollar films including Avengers: Endgame, which alone earned nearly $2.8 billion globally.

Biggest villain in MCU is no more Thanos

At the centre of Doomsday is Victor Von Doom, a character the Russo Brothers described as “the greatest Marvel villain ever,” placing him above Thanos. The statement is a clear hint at the studio’s intent to reposition its central antagonist following the Infinity Saga.

In a significant casting development, Robert Downey Jr was revealed to return to the MCU in the role of Doctor Doom. According to Kevin Feige, the idea had been under consideration for years, with concrete discussions beginning in early 2023. Feige noted that the concept was pitched directly to Downey Jr, who responded positively to the direction.

The film also marks the return of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers. Director Joe Russo said that continuing Steve Rogers’ journey was integral to the filmmakers’ decision to return to the franchise, adding that the story “required both Chris and Robert.”

Evans, speaking at the event, said he agreed to reprise the role only after being convinced of the character’s relevance to the story, and reacting to Doom’s return, he said (mostly in jest): “I don’t like him.”

Theatrical strategy: Infinity Vision

Alongside the film’s reveal, Disney introduced Infinity Vision, a new premium large-format (PLF) certification designed to standardise high-quality theatrical experiences, focusing on larger screens, improved projection, and immersive sound.

As part of this initiative, Avengers: Endgame will return to theatres in September with deleted scenes and additional content. How this will release in India is yet to be seen, given the country's history with IMAX in itself remains complicated.

Countdown to release

The CinemaCon presentation concluded with a countdown clock marking the days until Avengers: Doomsday releases in theatres on December 18, closing Marvel’s showcase on a forward-looking note as the studio prepares its next major ensemble film.
