Chinmayi Sripada has said that dubbing for Karuppu brought back memories of the controversy surrounding her work in Leo starring Vijay and Trisha Krishnan. After receiving praise for dubbing Trisha’s role in Karuppu, the singer admitted that she was “genuinely afraid” to reveal her involvement in the film because of the backlash she faced during Leo.
Reacting to the positive response coming her way, Chinmayi admitted that even talking publicly about the project made her uncomfortable.
“Strange I am readying myself saying this I was genuinely afraid this time, of sharing that I dubbed in Karuppu," she wrote on X.
The singer said one of the main reasons behind her concern was filmmaker RJ Balaji, with whom she shares a close personal bond.
According to Chinmayi, she worried that her involvement in the film could bring unnecessary criticism to him and his family because of what had happened earlier during Leo.
Chinmayi further revealed that dubbing some scenes in the film turned emotional for her and reminded her of painful memories from the past.
“I remember crying buckets dubbing a couple of scenes in the film – it was a massive trigger, almost like I saw everything play out from the past, on the big screen (sic)."
Even while speaking about her fears, the singer thanked RJ Balaji for giving her the opportunity to dub for Trisha’s role in the film. She also hoped that she and others who have allegedly been prevented from working in the industry would eventually be able to continue their careers without fear.
“And I hope Karuppu saami will help me work in my home ground, without fear and work without having to be scared of what will happen next. May God help Unban me and the others who have been banned from working, for years. #KaruppuBlockbuster (sic)."
In 2018, Chinmayi was removed from the Tamil Dubbing Union after she spoke during the #MeToo movement and accused union president Radha Ravi of sexual harassment.
Her dubbing comeback for Trisha in Leo later became a widely discussed issue in 2023, after director Lokesh Kanagaraj and producer Lalit Kumar reportedly brought her on board for the Tamil, Telugu and Kannada versions of the film despite the ban.
Karuppu stars Suriya and Trisha Krishnan in lead roles and has been receiving positive response from audiences in theatres.
