Puri Gajapati Maharaj Objects to Animated Film on Lord Jagannath; Makers to Hold Special Screening with Highest Regards for Gajapati

Bhubaneswar: A controversy has erupted over an upcoming animation film based on Lord Jagannath, with Puri Gajapati Maharaja Shri Dibyasingha Deb raising strong objections and urging a halt to its release.

The film, Mahaprabhu Jagannath, produced by Bhubaneswar-based ‘Eli Animations Private Limited’, is slated for theatrical release on July 10. After viewing the official trailer circulating on social media, the Gajapati Maharaja expressed deep dissatisfaction, stating that the film portrays a “completely fabricated and imaginary story” of the Lord that does not align with sacred scriptures.

“The propagation of Mahaprabhu Shri Jagannath’s glory must always be in accordance with the holy scriptures and Puranas composed by Maharshi Vyasdev,” the Gajapati said. “Such distorted and fictional presentations deeply hurt the religious sentiments and feelings of crores of Jagannath devotees across the world.”

The Gajapati Maharaja has appealed that the film’s release be stayed in cinema halls and on all digital media platforms until an expert committee appointed by the Shri Jagannath Temple Administration thoroughly reviews its content.

He called on the production house to take immediate steps to protect the purity of Jagannath culture.

Following the Gajapati Maharaj’s concerns, the film’s producers issued a press statement saying they hold all issues raised by the Gajapati Maharaja in the “highest regard.”

“As Mahaprabhu’s first servitor, the Gajapati Maharaja’s lifelong devotion, knowledge, and deep cultural responsibility are a guiding light and source of inspiration for all,” the makers said.

The production house confirmed that discussions have been held with the Gajapati Maharaja. With his permission and as per his convenience, a special screening of the film will be arranged for him before any public release.
