Fire breaks out at Tokyo elementary school, hundreds evacuated safely

Tokyo: A fire broke out at a downtown Tokyo school on Friday, forcing the evacuation of nearly 300 students and staff.

The fire began near the music room of Takinogawa No. 3 Elementary School in the city’s Kita Ward, and heavy smoke poured from the top floor of the four-story structure.

Firefighters rushed to the scene, and a quick evacuation was initiated, assisting students and teachers out of the school building to safety.

Around 300 students and faculty members were safely evacuated, and more than 100 people were rescued from the school premises, according to the fire dept, which said.

The police are carrying out the probe to ascertain the cause of the fire and check the possibility of any electrical short circuit in the fire at the premises.

More than a dozen fire vehicles and firefighters were involved in dousing the flames.

No student or teacher reported death from the fire, but authorities were investigating smoke inhalation, and others were treated at a medical facility in the close vicinity.

Parents gathered near the school expressed their concern.
