London: Best-selling British novelist and former politician Jeffrey Archer has died aged 86, his publisher HarperCollins announced.

He died “suddenly and peacefully” at his home on Monday, October 5, between writing sessions.

Archer sold more than 300 million books worldwide during a writing career spanning five decades.

He was best known for novels including Kane and Abel, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less and the Clifton Chronicles.

His death came just a day before the scheduled publication of his final novel, Adam and Eve.

Archer had recently appeared at a sold-out London event to sign copies of the book and had said it would be his last novel.

Archer also had a political career, serving as a Conservative MP for five years before becoming the party’s deputy chairman.

He was later made a life peer in 1992 and served in the House of Lords until retiring in 2024.

His political career was overshadowed by a 2001 conviction for perjury and perverting the course of justice after he was found to have lied during a libel case against the Daily Star.

He was sentenced to four years in prison and served two.

HarperCollins UK CEO and Archer’s editor Kate Elton paid tribute to him, describing him as a master storyteller who had brought joy to generations of readers.
