New Delhi: On Wednesday, four of those charged in the Delhi riots case over the February 2020 Northeast Delhi riots were released on bail that had been granted by the Supreme Court.
They are Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa Ur Rehman and Mohd Saleem Khan. Fatima, Haider and Rehman were released by the trial courts after bail bonds and sureties were confirmed and Khan was set free by the Mandoli Jail. One of the fifth accused that the apex court had granted bail is still in prison after not fulfilling the procedural process.
The bail was granted by the apex Court since it had been observed that the imprisonment had been long and the trial had been delayed. The court, however, refused to grant similar relief to some other co-accused in the case since the evidence against them was of different nature.

The trial court had put conditions, such as passport submission, restrictions of going out and fulfilling investigation needs. As the accused were being released, there were family members and supporters outside the jail premises.
The case is associated with the violence in northeast Delhi of 2020 that led to the loss of the lives of more than 50 people and the injury of hundreds of others. A number of people including activists, student leaders were arrested using strict laws and the case is still in court.
