Drake has made hip-hop history in a way he likely didn’t expect. No, he didn’t break a new streaming or sales record. He’s filing a petition against his own label for being partly responsible for losing his historic rap battle against Kendrick Lamar.

Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar: A Brief History Of A Beef

On Monday, the 6-God took legal action against Universal Music Group (UMG) and Spotify, claiming that the two companies conspired to inflate the streams for Lamar’s popular diss track, “Not Like Us.”

Just a day later, on Tuesday, he filed a petition against UMG again, this time accusing the music company of defamation for allowing the release of the now infamous diss track which falsely accuses the Toronto rapper of being a “certified pedophile” and “sex offender.”

Although Drake may have a case, in the eyes of many, he’s simply seen as a sore loser who doesn’t know how to take his loss in peace. With that in mind, The Root is going to look at the ways this legal move may have backfired for the Canadian pop star.

Karen mentality

No matter what happens in the future, Drake will always be seen as “hip-hop Karen.” Remember this is the same man who begged Lamar to release a diss track on “ “Push Ups,” saying “Drop, drop, drop.”

Even on “Taylor Made Freestyle,” he rapped, “Talk about him likin’ young girls, that’s a gift from me.”

Lamar then did the very thing he asked him to do and now he’s filing a petition against UMG because the song became much more popular than he imagined. Throwing a stone and then hiding our hand sounds like something a Karen would do.

“Snitching” is looked down upon in hip-hop culture

Even though Drake and his attorneys have not filed an official lawsuit against UMG, it sounds like he’s getting the cops involved in something that could’ve strictly been about music.

It’s reminiscent of the “Thank You For Not Snitching” episode from “The Boondocks,” where Riley would not even tell the cops who stole his dad’s car, even though he witnessed the entire crime.

Thank you for not snitching

If Drake wanted this whole thing to go away, taking legal action was not the answer, since it brought even more attention to the loss he took in the battle and highlights just how right Lamar was about him.

Seen as a hypocrite

The most damning thing about this petition Drake and his attorneys filed is that Lamar could’ve done the same thing to him. Did we forget that during the beef, Drizzy accused the Compton rap star of abusing his wife and claimed that he wasn’t even the father of one of his children?

Lamar could argue that UMG should’ve blocked the release of those tracks since they include allegations that may not be true. But he didn’t and simply spoke through his music.

Fans have already pointed this out on social media. One fan on X wrote, “UMG also released the song where Drake accused Kendrick of beating his wife and not being the biological father of his son.”

Another fan added, “The ‘They shouldnt have let him release that’ makes no sense when you released Family Matters and HP6. Im scratching my head at that. I get trynna get Lucian wherever you can, but this makes you look bad in the public thats already collectively looking for your downfall.”
