Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar: A Brief History Of A Beef

Cole is the latest to keep the mess going...addressing why he backed out of a battle with Lamar on the newly released track, “Port Antonio.”

Port Antonio

Unsurprisingly, the track brilliantly shows off Cole’s incredible skill as a lyricist as he raps bars like, “I was Mike in red leather/Tyrna tell him to stop/You better beat it before you see the heavy-metal get popped/He was a mean-ass wing with hell of a shot/But if no team draft King he on’ bet on the block.”

But what’s catching most folks’ attention is his explanation of why he exited the feud. He raps, “I pulled the plug because I’ve seen where that was about to go/They wanted blood they wanted clicks to make they pockets grow/They see this fire in my pen and think I’m dodgin smoke/I wouldn’t have lost a battle dawg I would’ve lost a bro/I would’ve gained a foe/And all for what? Just to attain some mo’.”

But Cole didn’t just leave it at that, as he goes on to share that he understands why his two industry friends engaged in battle and adds that he wasn’t willing to take it to the levels they did. He even alludes to both of them using social media has a tool to try to sway the battle to their side.

“If that means I gotta dig up dirt and pay the whole team of algorithm bot n****s just to sway the whole thing/On social media competing for your favorable memes/To be considered best of live and rest the weight of both things/I understand the thirst of being first that made ‘em both swing/Protecting legacies so lines got crossed perhaps regrettably/My friends went to war I walked away with blood on me,” he rapped.

There are widely varied responses to the record on social media. Some people loved the track and acknowledged that Cole is still one of the best MCs in the game.

Another user wrote on X, “The internet really tried to act like J. Cole isn’t one of the best rappers alive.”

But despite the wave of positive responses, many were more critical, saying that he’s doing too much on rapping about a beef he backed out of publicly.

One person wrote, “I refuse to let J Cole rewrite history as if he didn’t make 7 Minute Drill and we all didn’t hear how s**t it sounded.”

It seems that many hip-hop fans still have a bad taste in their mouth from when Cole shockingly apologized to K. Dot for releasing “7 Minute Drill.” It left people disappointed that one of the best MCs of his generation decided to exit a stage that could’ve shown who had the nicer pen in a battle of bars.

But that hasn’t affected the man himself one bit, as he’s continued to rap his ass off on other people’s features, including songs with A$AP Rocky and Tee Grizzly.
