She confirmed the story in an interview with People, explaining that she was drawn to his talent.
“Oh, I really liked him right away,” she said. “I thought his acting was brilliant. I barely said anything, and he just shook his head. Isn’t that interesting?”
It’s not clear when this happened, but “The Shawshank Redemption” star was married from 1967 to 1979, then again from 1984 to 2010. Meanwhile, the “Steel Magnolias” actress famously had an open marriage from 1954 to 1982. We’re not judging her choices, but it’s possible he had different ideas about marriage than she did.
Social media had plenty of opinions on MacLaine’s revelation, with some users questioning the story, as she has a well-known reputation for walking to the beat of her own drum.
Citing her previous statements about past lives, one user wrote, “Hmm . . . ok, but I believe she also claims she’s reincarnated from a Princess who once ruled the ‘lost kingdom’ of Atlantis, so…”
Another person went with a different choice, writing on X, “I would have gone with [Sidney] Poitier.”
Someone else disagreed with other users, posting, “Morgan should have his head examined.”
MacLaine has never been one to care what others think, so we doubt she’s interested in internet chatter. And Freeman doesn’t usually discuss his personal relationships publicly, so we don’t expect him to have much to say about Shirley’s admission.
