Louvre Unveils New Department Focused on Byzantine Art and Eastern Christianity

by · iefimerida

The Louvre Museum has announced the creation of a new department dedicated to Byzantine Art and Eastern Christianity, with Greece playing a central role.

This marks a significant expansion for the world's largest museum, which has not added a new department since 2003.

The department will showcase approximately 20,000 Byzantine art pieces, highlighting Greece's cultural and historical significance. French Ambassador to Greece, Laurence Auer, emphasized Greece's pivotal involvement, stating that such a department "could not exist without significant Greek participation."

Laurence des Cars, president and director of the Louvre, explained that the department aims to present the complexity of Byzantine culture and remind the world of its contribution to art and the role of icons within a context of respect and sensitivity.

The department is scheduled to open in 2027, following a design by the firm WHY.

Maximilian Durand, the newly appointed director of the department, outlined its key elements: a chronological scope spanning centuries, a geographic range encompassing diverse regions, an exploration of the role of religious icons, and spatial integration connecting ancient Greece, Roman arts, Islam, and the modern West. Durand emphasized that this project creates a platform for dialogue between East and West.
