What happens when an artist draws Pokémon without ever seeing them

by · Boing Boing

An artist and mom has found the funniest possible way to engage with Pokémon: by drawing them without ever seeing them. PokéMum creates her own versions of Pokémon based only on written descriptions, turning familiar mascots into fantastical sketches. Some come out surprisingly accurate; others look like cryptids from a lost medieval bestiary.

The project works because Pokémon descriptions are objectively bizarre when separated from their cute official designs. A "yellow rodent that stores electricity in its cheeks" sounds less adorable and more like something a park ranger in a fever dream warns you about. The resulting drawings have been described online as "biblically accurate Pokémon."

Naturally, the internet loves it. Fans on Reddit and social media are treating the drawings like accidental cryptozoology. I hope the world never shows this artist what actual Pokémon look like so that she can keep making her own versions forever.
