A social media reel turned into a legal debacle for a couple from Sikkim, who were recently arrested by Sadashivanagar police for allegedly growing a ganja plant on their balcony in MSR Nagar. The accused, Urmila Kumari and Sagar Gurung, have been residing above their fast-food hotel in the neighbourhood for several years, living peacefully until an Instagram post brought them unwanted attention.
It was found that the couple had added the ganja plant as part of their balcony decor, nestled among nearly 20 other flowering plants. Their inadvertent decor choice led to their arrest two days ago and now landed them a bail release.
It all started when Urmila, active on social media, shared a playful reel from her balcony. Little did she know that amidst the scenic backdrop, local youth would spot what looked like ganja plants peeking out from her flower pots. Suspicions grew, and soon enough, an anonymous tip reached the Sadashivanagar police station.
When officers arrived at the couple’s residence to investigate, Urmila was tipped off by her sister, who works in the hotel downstairs. In a hurried attempt to erase the evidence, Urmila reportedly uprooted the ganja plant and tossed it into the dustbin. However, the police were thorough, and a search of the property led them straight to the discarded plant, weighing 54 grams.
