Wular Lake continues to remain in frozen amid record dip in mercury - Greater Kashmir

Bandipora, Dec 25: The Wular Lake in north Kashmir, parts of which have been frozen days ago remains in same state.

With mercury further dipping low 7 notches on Wednesday, children were witnessed having fun to check the strength of the icy surface near Saderkoot Payeen village in Bandipora district.

The geese too were also seen flocking on the icy surface of the lake.

Locals earlier stated to this reporter that the phenomenon of lake having frozen has been witnessed almost after over two decades, hitting business of the fishermen and those dependent on lakes produce, including water chestnuts and lotus stem.

“Today the icy surface seems to have frozen thick,” Showkat Maqbool who is a local and associated with Wular Conservation and Management Authority (WUCMA) said.

He said the huge parts of lake continue to remain in frozen state that first froze on December 21 hindering the movement of boatmen inside the lake.

Notably, the lake is welcomed migratory birds in lakhs this season too enthralling bird enthusiasts.
