Zoë Kravitz’s ‘Blink Twice’ #1 on PVOD After Only Reaching #4 in Theaters

"The Garfield Movie" is Sony's latest recent release to stream and score at Netflix.

“Blink Twice” (Amazon MGM), actress Zoë Kravitz’s feature directorial debut with Channing Tatum as a tech billionaire who invites a cocktail waitress to his private island, was a modest performer in theaters last month. Its opening weekend only reached #4 at the box office, earning $7 million, with the full run amounting to $22 million.

Flash forward a few weeks, and it is #1 for its debut week in PVOD. It jumped to the top even as three other new releases (all weaker performers) also made at least one of the two top 10 lists below.

Netflix continues to find appeal for its recent originals, with four films in its top five. These though were trumped by “The Garfield Movie,” the latest Sony release to transition to the streamer four months after release. Azazel Jacobs’ “His Three Daughters” (premiering at Toronto Film Festival last year and garnering an excellent 84 Metacritic score) is top among debuting originals at #4 (its first day Saturday placed #2).

August and September had eight sub-$10 million wide releases, all but two now out on PVOD. “The Crow” (Lionsgate) last week also reached #1 (on Fandango only, which ranks by revenue). “Blink Twice” is also #1 at iTunes, which lists by transactions, suggesting a much more robust response.

“The Crow” is #2 at Fandango, but after last week at #6, it fell to #15 at iTunes. Curiously, two other lower-grossing titles were priced at $9.99, not the standard $19.99. “Cuckoo” (Neon) made both lists (#8 at iTunes, #10 at Fandango). Sony’s weak performing “Afraid,” just three weeks after its opening, placed #9 at Fandango. Sticking to $19.99, “1992” (Lionsgate) placed #7 at Fandango.

The other Netflix originals near the top of their top 10 include “Uglies,” last week’s #1, with Jeremy Saulnier’s “Rebel Ridge” continuing its strong run at #3. Behind “His Three Daughters” at #5 is the true crime documentary “Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter” in its second week.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is the next best animated title at #7. No film in the history of the domestic top 10 has placed as long as last year’s huge Universal hit. It is boosted currently by an alert that it is leaving soon after nine months (presumably returning to Peacock). Its achievement has been somewhat underplayed because when Netflix releases its weekly list of top movies, it does so for the whole world. They have rights to “Mario” and other recent Universal releases in few if any other territories, making it less likely to show as high on their internal data.
