‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ Will World Premiere at This Year’s New York Film Festival

Takashi Yamazaki's kaiju sequel will serve as the Spotlight Gala selection at the 64th edition of the festival.

The fall film festival calendar just added a major dose of kaiju cinema. The New York Film Festival has announced that Takashi Yamazaki’s “Godzilla Minus Zero” will be making its world premiere as the Spotlight Gala selection for the festival’s 64th edition.

“Godzilla Minus Zero” serves as a direct sequel to 2023’s “Godzilla Minus One,” which grossed more than $100 million worldwide, roughly ten times its budget. It rode strong critical reviews and Oscar buzz to become a cultural phenomenon, bolstering its success with a black-and-white re-release titled “Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color.”

The new film is a continuation of original Japanese studio Toho’s critically lauded Godzilla series, which exists separately from the American iteration seen in Legendary’s Monsterverse (next up on that front: 2027’s “Godzilla x Kong: Supernova). “Minus Zero” will take the action to New York City, as featured in a CinemaCon tease that showed the iconic monster marching alongside the statue of liberty.

“Godzilla Minus Zero” features returning stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Yuki Yamada, Kuranosuke Sasaki, and Sakura Ando alongside franchise newcomer Min Tanaka. Yamazaki, who won an Oscar for the first film’s visual effects, returns to write and direct. Notably, the sequel will also be the first Japanese movie to be shot for IMAX.

“It is truly an honor to introduce our film to a global audience for the first time in a place of such history and prestige,” Yamazaki said in a statement. “I am filled with both awe and excitement to see how far the power of Japan’s Godzilla can terrify audiences around the world, and whether they will resonate with what lies beyond that fear.”

“More than 70 years after the first Godzilla movie, Takashi Yamazaki continues to prove that there’s life in the old franchise yet, returning to its postwar roots to locate a haunting, primal terror,” NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim added. “Like its predecessor, ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ is a throwback blockbuster, a showcase for human drama and innovative craft, and we are excited to have its world premiere as this year’s NYFF Spotlight Gala.”

GKIDS will release “Godzilla Minus Zero” in theaters on Friday, November 6. NYFF64 takes place from September 25 – October 12. More festival announcements will roll out this week.
