Oscars 2026 Shortlists Revealed: ‘Wicked,’ ‘Sinners,’ ‘One Battle,’ ‘Sirāt,’ and International Features Advance

"Sinners," "Wicked: For Good," "Frankenstein," and "One Battle After Another" all scored multiple spots. So did "Sirāt" across a — surprise — five total categories.

It’s a weekday in December, which means another major awards announcement has been unveiled.

On Tuesday, December 16, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the shortlists across 12 categories for the 98th Oscars ahead of next year’s March 15 ceremony. The categories include Casting (new this year), Documentary Feature, International Feature, Original Score, Original Song, Cinematography, Makeup & Hairstyling, Sound, and Visual Effects, as well as the Documentary, Live Action, and Animated Short films.

Voting took place last week for participating branches specific to their categories. Shortlisted films in these categories will advance into the next round of voting (which will also broaden to all Oscar categories), which begins Monday, January 12, and closes Friday, January 16, 2026. Nominees are announced on Thursday, January 22.

“Sinners” managed eight spots on the shortlists below. “Wicked: For Good” is also present on eight lists, with “Frankenstein” on six, and “One Battle After Another,” “F1,” and “Sirat” on five. “Train Dreams” made a strong showing with four mentions, same for “Avatar: Fire and Ash” and “Marty Supreme.”

Animated Short Film

Fifteen films will advance in the Animated Short Film category for the 98th Academy Awards. 113 films qualified in the category. Academy members from the Animation Branch and Short Films Branch were invited to participate in the preliminary round of voting and must have met a minimum viewing requirement to be eligible to vote in the category.

In the nominations round, Academy members from all branches are invited to opt in to participate and must view all 15 shortlisted films to vote.

Academy members will be invited to view excerpts from the shortlisted films and pre-recorded interviews with their casting directors on Friday, January 9, 2026, in Los Angeles and London, and in New York on Saturday, January 10, 2026

Per the awards rules for the 98th Academy Awards, the preliminary round of voting will determine a shortlist of between 10 and 20 films.
