Alamo Drafthouse to Release Undistributed Festival Films, Starting with Butthole Surfers Documentary
The Alamo Exclusives series will highlight films from Sundance, SXSW, Tribeca, TIFF, Cannes, Berlin, and its own Fantastic Fest.
by Brian Welk · IndieWireWe were thrilled to see Letterboxd get in on the distribution game with digital rentals of some under-seen and even un-released films being available through their online “video store,” and now another cinephile institution is giving a platform to some movies that haven’t been able to get a proper release, though this time in actual theaters.
Alamo Drafthouse announced today that it is launching its Alamo Exclusives series, which will offer limited-run theatrical engagements to festival titles from Sundance, SXSW, Tribeca, TIFF, Cannes, Berlin, and its own Fantastic Fest that are otherwise without U.S. theatrical distribution. The company is working directly with filmmakers to release them nationwide and even give them some much-needed marketing support.
The first film in the series will be “Butthole Surfers: The Hole Truth and Nothing Butt,” a documentary that premiered at 2025’s SXSW about punk rock icons Butthole Surfers, best known for their chaotic live shows and shock value. The band shares the Austin, TX roots of Alamo Drafthouse. The film will screen at Drafthouse locations later this summer, and tickets go on sale July 31.
“From the very beginning, Alamo Drafthouse has championed independent film and built strong relationships with filmmakers because we know our audiences value discovering great cinema,” Michael Kustermann, CEO of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, said in a statement. “Time and again, they’ve shown they’ll come out to support bold, original films when given the opportunity. ‘Alamo Exclusives’ is a natural extension of that. It gives us another way to champion filmmaker-driven films that deserve to be discovered and connect them with the wider Alamo Drafthouse audience.”
Alamo already does its Drafthouse Recommends editorial series, an Alternative Content slate, other repertory screenings, and curates the annual Fantastic Fest, all of which give a platform and audience to some offbeat titles. But this program is in response to an indie film market that’s still troubled, with films that are acclaimed and draw big audiences at festivals still unable to make the financials work to find a distribution partner.
Alamo too wouldn’t be the first theater chain to act as its own distributor, but we might increasingly see more of these direct-to-audience offerings from exhibitors as they look for other creative programming opportunities.
“Too many incredible films premiere at festivals and then never receive the theatrical life they deserve,” said Lisa Dreyer, Director of Fantastic Fest and Film Innovation, in her own statement. “We are actively searching for films across all genres, from horror to comedy, to everything in-between, to champion in this new, exciting way. We’re thrilled to launch the program with ‘Butthole Surfers: The Hole Truth and Nothing Butt,’ a film that’s bold, entertaining, unapologetically original, and deeply connected to Austin’s creative DNA. We couldn’t imagine a better film to kick off this new chapter.”
“I’m so grateful that Alamo Drafthouse believes in this film and chose it to kick off the Alamo Exclusives distribution program,” added the film’s director Tom Stern. “I love that Alamo audiences are passionate moviegoers who genuinely embrace great documentaries and independent cinema. Knowing this film will be experienced on big screens by that kind of audience makes this release especially meaningful.”
Additional direct distribution titles will be announced in the coming months. Filmmakers and sales agents interested in participating in the program can find submission details at filmfreeway.com/AlamoExclusives.
