How to Enjoy Paul Thomas Anderson’s New Year’s Movie Marathon at Home
Weren't invited to the post-Este Haim wedding 16-hour movie marathon? Us either! But that shouldn't stop you from experiencing it from the comfort of your own couch.
by Kate Erbland · IndieWireIf you, much like us here at IndieWire were not invited to Este Haim’s wedding last week, including its already-legendary next day movie marathon programmed by the Paul Thomas Anderson, we’re here to help. Things might be bad (read: very bad) everywhere else, but this six-movie program seemingly designed to soothe the addled brains and bodies of those who spent the previous night celebrating both New Year’s Eve and the wedding of a Haim sister is very good. So why not let everyone enjoy it?
Per exclusive details from Page Six and via a raft of photos widely shared on social media over the weekend, we know some key details: the marathon kicked off at 9 a.m. the morning after the wedding, with guests hitting up the Ojai Playhouse to watch six films of PTA’s choosing, and all from his own collection.
The event opened with Alex Cox’s “Repo Man” right out of the gate, followed by Michael Curtiz’s classic “Casablanca” at 11 a.m., a short break, then Stanley Kubrick’s “Barry Lyndon” at 1:30 p.m, Martin Scorsese’s “Casino” at 5 p.m., then Mike Nichols’ “The Birdcage” at 8:30 p.m., and Charles Shyer’s finale film “Father of the Bride” starting at 11 p.m.
In true throwback blog chat fashion, I have not been able to stop thinking about this lineup since the moment I first laid eyes on it. Starting the day with “Repo Man”? Not kicking things off with “Father of the Bride”? What are we to make of the affection for remakes? No lunch break? How cool is it that PTA didn’t throw one of his own films in? (And that typo, don’t even get me started on that one.)
All this and more to ponder as you embark on this same marathon at home, with streaming guidance provided below for the major platforms (and free ones, when available). Wouldn’t it be cool if all of these were on one platform? Alas, maybe that can be PTA’s next venture: PTAFlix. Oh, and something funny: none of these are available on Netflix.
