Provincetown Film Festival Lineup: Ryan Murphy, ‘Stop! That! Train!,’ John Waters on ‘Sick of Myself,’ and More
The Provincetown International Film Festival runs June 10–14, opening with Adam Shankman's "Stop! That! Train!" and closing with Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick's "Family Movie."
by Ryan Lattanzio · IndieWireThe Provincetown International Film Festival celebrates its 28th year in 2026 — and IndieWire here announces the full lineup exclusively.
Acclaimed director, producer, and all-around TV mogul Ryan Murphy will be named 2026’s “Filmmaker on the Edge”; his latest projects include TV’s “Love Story,” about the ill-fated romance between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette.
Meanwhile, notable choreographer and director Adam Shankman (“Hairspray,” “A Walk to Remember”) will be honored with a festival tribute. His latest film, “Stop! That! Train!,” opens the festival on June 10 — it’s a veritable who’s-who of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” stars, from Ginger Minj to Jujubee. On June 11, Shankman will sit down with The Hollywood Reporter’s David Rooney for a wide-ranging tribute conversation.
The festival will close with “Family Movie” from filmmakers Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick. It follows a filmmaking family that finds themselves in a real-life horror movie when a body turns up on the set of their low-budget slasher, forcing them to cover up the murder to keep filming.
Other highlights of the festival include IndieWire favorites “Jaripeo” and “Leviticus,” both out of Sundance. John Waters, a Provincetown perennial, will present “The Drama” director Kristoffer Borgli’s discomfiting art-world satire “Sick of Myself.” The festival will also screen the 4K restoration of Waters’ “Desperate Living” out of the Criterion Collection.
“We are thrilled to present such a vibrant lineup that includes laugh-out-loud comedies, beginning with our fabulous opening night film ‘Stop! That! Train!,’ as well as innovative dramas, moving international features, compelling documentaries, and wildly creative short films that definitely speak to this moment,” said the festival’s artistic director Lisa Viola. “This year’s slate in particular represents bold new work from veteran filmmakers and first-time directors alike, and we look forward to having our devoted community gather in Provincetown to engage with our filmmakers and experience these films together on the big screen.”
