Paul Thomas Anderson Wins Best Director Oscar for ‘One Battle After Another’
This is PTA's fourth nomination for Best Director and his first Academy Award win in any category.
by Alison Foreman · IndieWireFew directors in Hollywood command as much reverence and curiosity as Paul Thomas Anderson. Taking home the Oscar for Best Director at the 98th Academy Awards for “One Battle After Another,” the seasoned filmmaker has finally claimed one of the industry’s highest honors after decades spent shaping contemporary American cinema on his own singular terms.
The victory marks a long-awaited milestone for Anderson, who has been nominated multiple times throughout his career but never won. This is his fourth nomination for Best Director and his first year winning in any category. With “One Battle After Another,” PTA expanded his thematic canvas without sacrificing the restless energy and emotional intelligence that’s defined his art for nearly 30 years.
“One Battle After Another” entered the night as one of the season’s strongest contenders, having earned 13 Oscar nominations — including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It also carried significant momentum from the broader awards circuit; Anderson won the top prize at the Directors Guild of America Awards, historically one of the most reliable predictors for this Oscars race.
By the time ballots closed, the industry narrative had positioned Anderson’s film as the one to beat. IndieWire’s awards editor Marcus Jones noted in his predictions that while early speculation pointed to a possible surge for Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners,” Anderson’s dominance was reflected across key bellwether prizes.
In his review, IndieWire’s chief film critic David Ehrlich awarded the movie an A, calling it “the first movie of its size to accurately crystallize how insane it feels to be alive right now.” That sense of scale represents something new for Anderson, whose career has often favored intimate character studies over outright spectacle while remaining consistently cinematic.
With “One Battle After Another,” the director proved that his voice can stretch comfortably across blockbuster proportions while remaining unmistakably his own. If anything, PTA’s Best Director win feels less like a surprise than a long-overdue surrender.
The 98th Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday, March 15, with Conan O’Brien returning as host. The ceremony was broadcast live on ABC starting at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. Check out the full list of winners right here.
