NYFF Unveils 2026 Currents Lineup, Featuring Boundary-Pushing Cinema from Around the World

The section will be headlined by Tala Hadid's new documentary "Bardi," which centers around a Moroccan equestrian military ritual dating back to the 16th century.

If you’re a New York cinephile, every day this month might as well be Christmas morning. The New York Film Festival has rolled out a massive amount of programming for its upcoming 64th edition: the festival will open with “Paper Tiger,” close with Ava Duvernay’s “14th,” feature world premieres of “Godzilla Minus Zero” and “Behemoth!,” and feature a Spotlight program highlighting many of the best films from the global festival circuit.

Prior announcements have been filled with names that you know, but today’s is dominated by filmmakers that even the most devoted moviegoers are unlikely to recognize. That’s by design, as the festivals Currents section seeks to highlight boundary-pushing, unconventional work from filmmakers around the world.

This year’s Currents programming is headlined by “Bardi,” a new documentary from filmmaker and photographer Tala Hadid that follows participants in a Moroccan equestrian ritual dating back to the 16th century. Other highlights include the world premieres of Éric Baudelaire’s “For the Moon,” Carlos Reygadas’s “Heil Jupiter!,” Dan Sallitt’s “What Can’t Be Mentioned,” and Tiffany Sia’s “Overt Listening.” The festival will also screen a restoration of legendary avant-garde filmmaker Fred Camper’s 1984 film “Suicide Note.”

“The Currents lineup pushes against the conventions of cinematic form, putting into relief the standardization that dominates the film landscape,” New York Film Festival artistic director Dennis Lim said in a statement. “This year’s selection is especially thrilling in its scope and diversity, encompassing multiple modes of production and possibilities for film language, and visions that range from the dynamically intimate to the genuinely — sometimes literally — cosmic.”
