Home Alone fans spot 'major plot hole' in movie 34 years after its release
by George Allen, Kiesha Dosanjh · NottinghamshireLiveIt's been 34 years since Home Alone hit cinemas, but fans are still uncovering potential plot holes. As the film makes its annual return to screens, enthusiasts have been revisiting the original and questioning why a pivotal aspect of the storyline was never revisited in the sequels.
In the first instalment, Kevin McCallister is accidentally left behind when his family embarks on a holiday to Paris, leading to a series of chaotic events involving two bumbling burglars and Kevin's ingenious booby traps. However, fans have pointed out that in the sequel, Kevin makes no direct mention of this traumatic experience, instead only hinting at being left home alone.
A Reddit user observed: "All throughout the second film, his family only ever describes him as being left alone during Christmas-never once do they refer to the fact that he fought off two thieves while he was home alone. The only witness to Kevin fighting the thieves was the old man with the snow shovel. One would think that he would have discussed the ordeal with Kevin's parents."
This has led to speculation about why Kevin and his neighbour might have kept this information from his family, with the fan asking: "A plot hole? Or, alternatively, is there a possibility that Kevin hallucinated the entire events of the first and second films? " Viewers continued to share their theories, with one fan suggesting: " Kevin does tell his family, but no one believes him would be my explanation for that one."
Another viewer believed the film had already hinted at Kevin's intention to keep the events a secret, writing: "I felt this was addressed when they asked Kevin what he was up to and he said not much just hung around. It showed he was going to keep it a secret.", reports the Mirror.
One fan expressed their disbelief at how Kevin managed to clean and repair the entire house without leaving any evidence, except for the gold tooth found by his dad in the living room. Home Alone has become a global sensation and continues to be a festive favourite nearly four decades after its release.
The franchise now boasts six films, released between 1990 and 2021. Despite being synonymous with the series, Macaulay Culkin departed the franchise after 1992's Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
