Take A Moment For Road Safety – Metlink Joins Road Safety Week 2026
by Metlink · SCOOPMetlink is promoting safe pedestrian behaviour around buses on the Golden Mile for Road Safety Week 2026, where a small pause can make a lot of people’s day safer.
Road Safety Week (4-10 May) is led by Brake – the road safety charity, with this year’s theme, ‘Be a road safety hero’ recognising everyone who helps to make roads safer and showing how everyone on and around roads has a part to play.
The Golden Mile, which runs from Lambton Quay, down Willis St, Manners St and Courtenay Place, is a particular hotspot for pedestrians crossing in front of buses says Kinetic bus driver Raj.
“Driving a bus through the Golden Mile means being hyper-aware,” says Raj.
“With so much activity, people can appear from different directions, sometimes unexpectedly and they may not always be aware of what’s happening around them.
“Buses need more time and space to stop than smaller vehicles, so when pedestrians use crossings, it helps bus drivers better anticipate movement and keeps things safer for everyone."
Road safety isn’t just focussed on pedestrians and drivers says Metlink senior manager for Network & Customer Tamsin Evans.
“Our bus passengers are also impacted by risky behaviour on the road.” says Evans.
“Earlier this year we had an incident reported where a driver had to brake suddenly when a pedestrian stepped out in front of the bus, and the sudden stop caused an elderly passenger to fall from their seat.”

“In a busy stretch like the Golden Mile there are so many factors at play and our drivers do excellent work safely operating their buses and moving thousands of people every day.
“We all have a part to play in making journeys safer for everyone. We’re encouraging pedestrians to take a few seconds more to get to a crossing because that can make all the difference to a lot of people’s safety.”
