Dónal Gunning Kicked Off Spring With New Single ‘Breathing’ Released August 28th

Things couldn't be better for Aotearoa’s upcoming Irish musician, off the bat of his debut international tour of Ireland and second national tour of NZ, he rolls out his catchiest single yet.

Blending a britpop swagger with radio-friendly rock, Breathing is an anthemic celebration of life. The song explores longing, escapism and the search for connection.

The verses carry a fun, restless energy, chasing something just out of reach, referencing “road trips, champagne-fuelled nights, sweet sugar wine and late-night adventures” creating a vivid, cinematic backdrop. The chorus hits powerfully with vulnerability and relief, capturing a feeling of catharsis looping the recurring binary metaphor of breathing. Dónal wittingly turns the ordinary, unconscious act of breathing into a symbol of release.

‘‘Breathing’ is an uplifting anthem about connecting with the present moment. It speaks to times when life moves too fast, reminding listeners to slow down and smell the roses’.

The track was recorded in Wellington and produced by Peter Jamieson (Soundfields audio).

Breathing’s infectious chorus hook with its driving marshall-fuelled guitars makes for another earworm track by the Irishman. It cleverly combines the melodic craftsmanship of pop with the attitude of rock and grunge. The 80s classic rock-inspired solo, reminiscent of Slash, pays homage to the golden era of rock.

Dónal and his bandmates, The Bucks, will be back on the road this Summer touring New Zealand to promote their debut album. Recently they featured at Kittlesfest in Wellington, alongside kiwi rock giants, Curlys Jewels.
